mumok Architectural Tour

Did you know that the mumok is the largest sounding museum in the world? Did you know that the history of the MuseumsQuartier is closely linked to the former imperial court stables?
The new art and culture centre, or MQ for short, opened in 2001 and was conceived as a meeting place between historic baroque buildings and contemporary architecture. The urban design concept of the German-Austrian architectural firm Ortner & Ortner included the construction of several important cultural institutions, including the Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien, the Leopold Museum and the Kunsthalle. The independent monolithic structure of the mumok appears as an oversized sculpture and at the same time as a dominant spatial feature in the listed urban landscape of Vienna's seventh district.
The genius loci (Latin for ‘spirit of the place’) characterises the newly created building structure. On the one hand, it continues the past of the building environment in an architectural way; on the other hand, it emphasises it stylistically in a paradoxical way by making the contrasting opposites actively perceptible. The new, modern views are to be taken into account.
For example, the mumok building follows the alignment of the Neubau district, which was associated with the upper bourgeoisie and avant-garde in the 19th century. Although its architectural form appears closed and solid from the outside, the building is open and bright on the inside. The use of natural materials such as basalt lava slabs for the façade and interior wall panelling as well as semi-transparent construction elements for the interior furnishings give the building a unique character and create visitor-friendly spaces.

Take a journey through time on an architectural guided tour! Explore the special features of our building! Play the world's largest xylophone, the mumok, yourself! And of course we also take a look at an exhibition and bring selected highlights with us.
