Fatima Hellberg takes up position as new General Director

Fatima Hellberg

Fatima Hellberg assumes her new role as General Director of mumok – Museum moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien on October 1. With a collection of over 13,000 artworks and series, mumok ranks among the largest museums for modern and contemporary art in Central Europe. It is also a leading institution for Classical Modernism, Pop Art, Vienna Actionism, and contemporary art.

On the occasion of her start at mumok, Fatima Hellberg states: “mumok has a remarkable and important history, a rich and exciting present-day community of staff, artists, and audiences, and a potential that is profound. I am excited to begin this new chapter, and I look forward to working with the team as we extend and sharpen mumok’s profile and connect with its long-running commitment to the synergies between art and life. That is, an exploration of the connection between our lived realities and the political and social fabric of the present, and how these are represented through artistic expression. In the plans ahead these synergies will be explored, and questions asked, in a dynamic interplay between program, collection and a new phase of educational work and outreach.“

Fatima Hellberg, born 1986 in Sweden, studied art history and visual culture at the University of Oxford and Curating Contemporary Art at the Royal College of Art in London. From 2015 to 2019, she served as director of Künstlerhaus Stuttgart. From 2019 to 2025, she was director of Bonner Kunstverein which received several awards under her leadership. She has curated exhibitions and projects at institutions such as the Tate Modern and the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London, the CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts in San Francisco; Malmö Konsthall and the Museion in Bolzano. She is the editor and author of  numerous catalogues and contributed to journals including Texte zur Kunst, Frieze Magazine, Kunstkritikk, Afterall and Kunstforum.

On November 14, 2025, the new General Director will present her plans for the future direction of mumok at a press conference.
