Dorit Margreiter
Really!
Dorit Margreiter’s artistic interest is in the connections between visual systems and spatial structures and the consequences for our everyday lives and societies. The focus is on modern and contemporary architecture and forms of media representation. For her solo show at mumok Dorit Margreiter will transform the complete exhibition gallery into an artistic installation including the display and exhibition architecture, films, mobiles, and photographs.
The central element is a new film work that was made in the Vienna Prater’s hall of mirrors. In this labyrinthine architecture of glass and reflecting surfaces, our gaze is fragmented, distorted, multiplied, and blurred. Margreiter’s film thus addresses the differences between the physical and visual fundamentals of orientation, as well as the material and imaginary components of film representation. Both this new work and further films, photographs, and sculptures by Margreiter, which are part of the whole installation, refer to the museum as the location of this exhibition. A new mobile made of mirrors, for example, raises questions about the presentation space and the therein dominant relations of the visual and the material, as also does a collection of photographic tableaus showing depictions of the material of glass.
