Between Strings
Between Strings is an interdisciplinary installation working with sound, space and movement.
The installation consists of 7 taut strings, stretched over the course of 5 to 10 meters combined with contact microphones, acoustic resonance chambers and lights.
As a large-scale string instrument, the strings resonate through touch as the players or visitors move along the cords. Working with different layers of amplification—such as the acoustic resonance chambers and a quadraphonic electronic speaker-setup—the installation expands the sonic dimensions into a varied, spatial experience, sounding differently depending on the position in the room.
The collaboration with the ensemble between feathers and Kirstine Lindemann reflects the ongoing musical focus of the mumok’s art education and collection. The interactions between modern and contemporary art and the parallels in music since the 20th century have been characterised by creative experimentation and revolutionary ideas, which continue in Between Strings.
Through performances, artist talks, accompanying workshops and daily guided hours, the quartet Between Feathers based in Austria and the Danish composer Kirstine Lindemann, in collaboration with mumok, invites the audience to join the exploration of the installation Between Strings. The premiere of Lindemann's 50-minute composition String Theory will be hosted by mumok as part of the exhibition.
