Matters of Relations

The long-awaited retropective of works by the Korean artist and performer Geumhuyng Jeong, starts this year at mumok. Jeong’s works – which were recently invited to the Venice Biennale a. o., are poetic studies of a kind of animism; sympoietic assemblages which question the material and immaterial borders dividing humans, objects and machines.
Needcompany co-founder Grace Tjang will be present with her piece MALAM/NIGHT, previously shown in the legendary exhibition The Sun Machine is Coming Down at the ICC in Berlin. Inspired by nocturnal observations of the plants in her garden, she embodies Dhalang, the player, in the Javanese wayang shadow play.
We then take a detour to Budapest with Boglárka Börcsök’s and Andreas Bolm’s Figuring Age – an encounter with modernism of unanticipated topicality that manifest in three Hungarian female dancers, or, as they say, movement artists, who at the time of Börcsök’s intense research were between 94 and 101 years of age.
Philipp Gehmacher’s The Slowest Urgency (an environment), unfolding the paradox its title suggests, will be first performed at mumok as a group piece featuring six dancers, with sound by Peter Kutin. The performance is durational, for the duration of 180 minutes the audience is invited to come, go, return.
Finally, Davi Pontes and Wallace Ferreira from Brazil confront us with the ambivalence of the perpetually interconnected desire between submission and lust.

The common thread among all these positions, Collaborations, corresponding with the title of the current exhibition at mumok, with accompanying collaborative-performative events in the White Cube on a museum’s floor that has been vacated especially for the festival.
