Alejandro Cesarco’s work (b. 1975 in Montevideo, Uruguay) continues in the tradition of conceptual art. His works contain thematic references to popular culture, art history and literature. The Baloise Art Prize from Art Basel 2011 was awarded to his installation The Streets Were Dark With Something More Than Night or The Closer I Get To The End The More I Rewrite The Beginning, which combined wall texts, a slide-show, photographs and an artist’s book.
The various media used in the installation draw the reader into the work in the manner of a detective story, while at the same time avoiding its conventional narrative style. This process finally also leads the viewer to heightened self-observation.
