Helen Chadwick, Glossolalia, 1993

mumok live

Helen Chadwick's work Glossolalia (1993) is currently on view in the exhibition The Animal Within – Creatures in (and outside) the mumok Collection, curated by Manuela Ammer and Ulrike Müller. The title of the work can be translated as "speaking in tongues." Incomprehensible, ecstatic speech in a trance or prayer. In Chadwick's work, the many tongues are only recognizable at the second glance. Piled up into a tower, they rise up in the midst of fox pelts. In our new video, art educator and artist Mikki Muhr talks about Helen Chadwick and her preference for controversial materials that do not always make viewers comfortable.
